Society for Child Development created a livelihood program for people with disabilities called Avacayam. The first steps of this journey started with a temple priest pacing back and forth trying to figure out what to do with the temple flowers that were of no use to him.
Upon questioning him the organisation founder Dr. Madhumita Puri found out the source of his troubles and the cause of it, …
“300 kgs of waste is collected by us every week.
Our collection consists of a wide varity of dry waste. Ranging from
plastic to paper, rubber, metal shavings, glass plates and many more interesting variety of waste.”
… the person who used to pick up the flowers refused to do the job.
Madhumita offered to help and asked where to throw away the flowers. The priest revealed that the river was where the hired help used to dispose of the flowers.
Onward she went to repeat the deeds of her predecessors. Upon arrival at the banks, she witnessed a repulsive sight. Rotting flowers in muddy plastic bags covering most of the sand and floating in the river to pollute new destinations.
She did not have the heart, and she came back to the organisation with the flowers.
Puzzled with the problem ahead, it dawned upon her to use it for the betterment of the youngsters with disabilities that she trained in Prabhat.
So they were taught to pluck the flower petals to improve their motor skills.
What first started as a therapeutic exercise, gradually became a full fledged flower recycling work to sustain a livelihood program for adults with disabilities.
Today our recycling program supports the livelihood of more than a 100 people with disabilities every month and making more than 30 tons of holi colours from waste flowers.
Avacayam is an employment program for people with disabilities, where they can “learn & earn”. Since 2001 our team has recycled various types of materials (that would have been thrown away as waste) into ‘awe-inspiring‘ products.

Avacayam is an employment program for people with disabilities. In early 2001, our work started with recycling temple flowers into holi colors and agarbatis, and today we have a full team of weaver and tailors with disabilities with the capacity to fullfill export level orders.
Since 2001, we’ve been recycling temple flowers into agarbatti (incense sticks) and dhoop as a way to support people with disabilities.
What began as a therapeutic activity for the mentally challenged has grown into a meaningful livelihood program. By turning sacred floral waste into fragrant products, we promote both sustainability and inclusion.
Our agarbatti and dhoop are available as raw sticks—for you to add your own scents—or pre-scented, handmade by individuals with disabilities, giving them the chance to learn, grow, and earn with dignity.
