Welcome to Avacayam, Our Disability Livelihood Program
Walmart often helps suppliers see the possibilities for new business opportunities. One of our suppliers in India, a nonprofit called Society for Child Development (SfCD), founded by Dr. Madhumita Puri, had been working on recycling waste through a “Trash to Cash” program. SfCD’s approach helps differently abled women and men earn a dignified livelihood through converting waste into products.
For Dr Madhumita Puri, the inspiration to found Trash to Cash came from an everyday conversation she had while training persons with disabilities. She asked a young man in her class what he wanted out of his life. His pensive answer was, “Everyday, I want to wake up in the morning, eat breakfast and leave for work. In the evenings, I want to relax and drink a cup of tea, then watch a bit of TV before dinner and sleep early to be fresh for the next morning”. He yearned for an ordinary life.
"My journey has been long and a fruitful one. Never did I think that we would be able to come so far. All I ever wanted was to create a safe haven for children with disabilities. Though my work is not over yet, today the opportunities that have culminated through this journey has changed their lives for the better."
